Where Zalgo comes from

“Zalgo” began around 2004 as a creepypasta meme in which ordinary comic strips were edited to become increasingly corrupted. The name stuck to the text effect, which uses Unicode combining diacritical marks (U+0300–U+036F) stacked far beyond what any language needs.

Be kind with it

Heavy Zalgo can spill over lines of text above and below it and is unreadable to screen readers. It is fun for a username flourish or a spooky message; avoid it for anything people need to actually read.

Questions people ask

What do the up, middle and down sliders do?

They choose how many combining marks are attached above the letter, overlaid through it, and hung below it. The output is reproducible, so the same settings give the same result.

How do I remove Zalgo from text?

Delete the combining marks: any Unicode-aware tool that strips characters in the range U+0300–U+036F restores the plain letters.

Is Zalgo text safe?

It is just text. It cannot run code. It can make a page slow or messy if thousands of marks are stacked, which is why many sites limit it.
