Borrowed from phonetics

Unicode has no official small-caps alphabet. Most of these letters come from the International Phonetic Alphabet and phonetic extensions, where small capitals mark particular sounds. The q and x have no small-cap form, so the closest match is used.

Superscript letters come from the Modifier Letters block, used by linguists for things like aspirated sounds (ʰ). The q is missing there too.

Questions people ask

Why is one letter in small caps not quite right?

There is no small capital Q or X in Unicode, so the generator substitutes the nearest shape.

Is there a full subscript alphabet?

No. Unicode only encodes subscripts for some letters (a, e, h, i, j, k, l, m, n, o, p, r, s, t, u, v, x); others stay normal size.
