Why full-width letters exist

Chinese, Japanese and Korean characters are square, so a Latin letter placed among them looks cramped. Early East Asian computer systems included full-width Latin letters that occupy the same square cell. Unicode kept them in the Halfwidth and Fullwidth Forms block (U+FF01–U+FF5E), and vaporwave artists adopted them in the early 2010s for their stretched, retro-digital look.

Questions people ask

What is the difference between wide and spaced text?

Wide text swaps each letter for its full-width form. Spaced text keeps normal letters and inserts a space between them, which is more readable but easier for apps to trim.

Does wide text count as more characters?

No, each full-width letter is one character. Spaced text doubles the count because of the added spaces.
