What β€œOld English” lettering really is

The style people call Old English is blackletter, the family of scripts used across Europe from about the 12th century. Gutenberg’s Bible (c. 1455) was set in a blackletter form called Textura. Fraktur, the variety these characters are named after, stayed standard in German printing until the 20th century.

Despite the name, it has nothing to do with the Old English language, which was written in an insular script centuries earlier.

Readability warning

Blackletter capitals are notoriously hard to tell apart, especially 𝔄, π”˜ and 𝔑. For a name tattoo, show the artist the plain spelling too, and consider mixing blackletter capitals with a simpler lowercase.

Questions people ask

What is the difference between gothic, Old English and blackletter?

In everyday use they mean the same thing: heavy, broken-stroke medieval lettering. Blackletter is the typographic term; Fraktur and Textura are specific styles within it.

Does gothic text work in Instagram names?

In the bio and caption, yes. The Instagram display name field also accepts it, but usernames (the @handle) only allow plain letters, numbers, periods and underscores.

Are there gothic numbers?

No. Unicode Fraktur covers letters only, so digits stay plain.

Why does π”ˆ look strange on my phone?

Your system font draws the Fraktur characters. Some phones use a lighter or older design, so the same text can look slightly different on Android, iPhone and Windows.
